3 Brands Using Social Media for Social Good

Have you ever wondered “Why social media?” Beyond the availability and convenience of it…what is the deeper purpose that social media can serve?

Recently, I read Brian Solis’s blog post “Social media is about social science and not technology,” and what struck me was the potential for social good that social media can create. Brian stated that social science is the “study of society and human behavior.” This is a critical statement because, in the end, social media is about people…human interaction.

Three Examples of Social Good


They use social media to foster giving back to the community. They have over 170 million members, and raise money for over 27,000 nonprofits. The best part is that you can search, find, and donate to thousands of organizations at the click of a button.


(RED) is a website that sells a few everyday products, but a certain amount of the proceeds go directly to eliminate AIDS. For example, if you buy the (RED) Starbucks gift card, every time you use it, 5 cents is donated to fight AIDS. Music For Relief

Music For Relief is an organization comprised of music professionals who believe that collaboration can create positive change. They have collected over $5 million dollars in donations so far. They use social media to help aid victims in natural disasters such as tornadoes, earthquakes, typhoons, and tsunamis.
