Have you just started out on twitter? Or have you been on twitter, but never really developed a strategy? Figuring out when, how, and what to tweet can be quite a daunting task… I know that it was for me. The thing is that everyone is different, and there is no overall “perfect” twitter posting strategy. What I can share with you are tips that have worked best for us!
1.) Know your audience
Find out not only who your ideal audience is, but also people who could fit into your audience. This will determine how you go about the next 2 steps. This is one step you cannot overlook!
2.) Set the Tone
Knowing your audience directly affects what tone, topics, and approach you take in tweeting. If you are not sure how to do this, look at what your audience is saying. Are their tweets formal? Are they informal? What topics do they tweet about most? I know this may seem like an intimidating, and slightly overwhelming task, but you have to start somewhere. Just take it a day at a time, until you have figured out what makes your audience tick. Remember, sometimes people want to laugh, or be engaged in other topics than just your niche. Most importantly, be real. Nobody wants to read tweets from a robot. People want to know there is a human behind the posts!
3.) Schedule your tweet times and topics
Here at Slice we use Hootsuite to schedule our tweets. Remember to always tweet other people’s content. Of course, we all want out own content out there, but promoting others is an important part of proper Twittequette.
4.) Shorten your shared links
When sharing content, always remember to shorten the link. Not only does it save characters, but it also makes your tweets look less hectic and overwhelming. It also draws the focus to the important part of your post: the topic. We use (and love) bitly. Not only does it shorten the links, but it also analyzes your click rates.
5.) Measure
You can find a ton of research conducted to figure out when is the best time for you to tweet. This is great information for beginning your twitter strategy … but only you can know when the best time for your tweets is. One great thing about bit.ly is that it analyzes the click rate of your links! Personally, I check this about twice a week. Not only does this help me understand when the best time to tweet is, but also what topics people are most interested in.
6.) Engage
Start conversations with your audience, your top influencers, and people who share your content. Another good way to engage is to join discussions related to your niche. TweetChat is an easy way to do this. Just log on to twitter, and join a conversation based on hashtags of interest to you.
Hopefully, we’ve shared some helpful ideas for you to use in your twitter strategy. Remember, do what works best for you and your audience. If you have any questions, feel free to comment below, or contact us through our website or Facebook page.
