Have you ever felt completely overwhelmed by the constant flow of information in your Facebook stream? I know that I have. This is why I love Facebook smart lists. For the last several weeks we have been blogging about the extensive changes to Facebook profiles. This post about smart lists is our last installment in this series. These smart lists allow you to organize people according to category. Personally, most of the time I like reading updates from my close friends and my family exclusively. Smart lists make this simple and easy. To learn 4 quick tips on effectively using Facebook smart lists keep reading…
Facebook has created 5 categories of “Smart” Lists:
- Close friends
- Acquaintances
- Family
- Workplace
- Geographical Area
Facebook automatically assigns people to these lists based on demographic information and how you connect and engage with Facebook users on your personal profile. These lists are intended to assist you in organizing/separating different conversations. However, if you don’t know how to edit/use them, it can be very frustrating.
So, here are 4 quick tips:
1. You can go in to manage and edit these lists.
All you have to do is click on the list, and then in the upper right hand side click on “manage lists.” This feature is great because it helps you focus on specific audiences. You can have as many or as few people as you want in any of your smart lists.
2. You can manage what updates you get in your smart lists.
Do you ever get tired of seeing posts from every band or brand your friend “liked?” You can now change how many (or how few) updates you receive from specific people in your smart lists. Simply go to your “manage list” then click “choose update types…” This will give you a list of updates from each list that you’ve created so you can then check or uncheck posts according to your preference. This allows you to see specific types of information from the people in that list.
3.) You can make updates that ONLY certain lists can see.
Updating about where you are going this weekend, but only want your best friends to know? I know this happens to me frequently. Most of the time it is a privacy thing; I just do not want every Facebook friend I have knowing about my weekend plans. You can now control this with the smart lists. Just click on the specific list to put a status update on, and this screen will show up:
4. There is no ticker in the smart lists.
Do you feel like the new Facebook ticker is cumbersome? I find it distracting to always have something in the upper right hand corner constantly changing and updating. Good news! If you view your smart lists there is no ticker! This should help you feel less bombarded by information you are not truly interested in.
This is the conclusion of all of the major Facebook updates. Our blog has several articles explaining about the most recent Facebook Timeline changes, so feel free to check those out.
