NEW FACEBOOK TIMELINE: PART II

Did you see our last post about features of Facebook’s new Timeline? If you didn’t make the switch yet, you can click here for the link.  In this second part of the series, we will talk about how to fill in your timeline history, the check-in map, your activity log, and more.

Your History: Filling in the Gaps

Do you remember the first day you got glasses? Or that time when you were 8 and broke a bone? Or the day you graduated from high school? You can now go back in fill in information about past events on your Facebook page. All you have to do is go to your status update bar, and click on “Life Event.” It will give you a drop down of 5 different types of life events.

Choose your category, insert the information and fill in the date/year it happened! Keep in mind what is appropriate to post, however. Keep in mind that future co-workers, clients and generations will be able to see this.  We advise you to use Mari Smith’s privacy evaluation criteria to decide what details you want to share.  We talked about Mari’s 3 part system for deciding what’s appropriate to share online here.

The Timeline Map

The new Timeline has a feature that can record all the places you check into on this map. This is a great tool to keep track of family vacations and excursions that you want to remember and  people you have met. Consider posting this information after-the-fact so as not to set yourself up for any unanticipated surprises when you return home!

Activity Log

The activity log records all of your posts, comments, manage approvals, remove unwanted posts, and changes to your privacy settings. This is a PRIVATE log that only you can see. To locate the log, go to “View Activity,” which is on the right hand side of your profile page, right below your cover photo:

It will take you to this screen. Looking for a specific update? You can filter the information by photos, comments, likes, event, groups, updates, and  more. Just go to the upper right hand side of the activity log, and click the drop down menu “All.” This will bring up a full list of options.

Hide and Allow Option

If you look at any of your status updates, you will see two boxes on the upper right hand side. The “star” allows you to feature an update. To learn more about featuring, go to our previous blog: NEW Facebook Timeline: Part 1. The second box allows you to add a location to the update, hide it from your timeline (which means it will not show up on your profile stories. i.e. Facebook “wall”), delete the post, or report/mark as spam.

Timeline Activity

Have you ever wanted to go back two years ago and see what posts you made? Now you can! This activity is literally a ticket to your own personal Facebook timeline. All you have to do is view your profile, and you will see this bar on the upper right hand side of your page. You can then click on any month, or any year (or both!), and it will take you directly to the posts you made at that time.

Ticker and Chat

Your ticker and chat are found on the “Home” page, and located at the upper right hand side. The Ticker is the top half of the stream and records in real time all of your friend’s updates, likes, statuses…etc. The chat is located in the lower half of the stream and shows you which Facebook friends are online in real time.

There you have it – all of the new Facebook Timeline changes! Which is your favorite? Personally, mine is the activity log. Interested in activating the new Facebook Timeline early?
