Slice Team

Richard “Dick” Rabil, Founder and President of SLICE, believes that the best creative is driven by ideas that break convention. A quick-start thinker, Dick sees in pictures that empower organizations to visually tell their story. As the marketing landscape has changed, he and his wife, Kathi, have transitioned to bring their depth of experience online through interactive, social media and other emerging technologies.

Dick is an expert in design and branding strategy. Spanning a career of over 30 years, he and the Slice Team have repeatedly been recognized for their excellence in branding and communications. He has sharply honed his skills of creative direction for large meeting campaigns, web sites, publications and identity. Under his leadership, the Slice team has garnered numerous awards for their creative work.

The roots of Dick’s career are deeply embedded in higher education. His first job was with CASE, (the Council for Advancement and Support of Education).  He cut his teeth on meeting promotions and publication design. Today, his team continues to serve higher education associations and institutions such as the Virginia Tech EMBA program. The director of the EMBA recently said that he and Slice “have contributed to the success of the program, with their creativity, design and knowledge of network marketing and branding.” He has also been honored by the Smithsonian Board of Regents for Service to the Smithsonian Institution on behalf of the National Postal Museum.

Dick is second of five children born into a Lebanese Christian family in North Carolina. He learned the meaning of life and work from his father who was an unpretentious but well-respected surgeon. He has earned degrees in Fine Art and Graphic Design from UNC-Chapel Hill and Virginia Commonwealth University, respectively.

On days off, Dick enjoys discovering new exhibits at the Smithsonian, taking photo tours with friends, watching his children grow into adulthood and listening to his wife sing opera.

Kathi Rabil, CEO, subscribes to the business perspective that every challenge carries the seeds of opportunity.  She loves helping clients reach their goals by conveying their story using interactive media. As CEO, Kathi directs marketing and business development. Under her leadership, the Slice team has expanded its product offerings to include social media strategy and consulting. In 2006, she was instrumental in building an internal campaign to rebrand the agency as Slice.

Recently, Kathi completed a six-month training program through the Relationship Marketing Institute and is listed in their Social Media Professionals Directory. Social media maven Mari Smith says that Kathi “thoroughly understands how to make (social media) a part of a dynamic marketing plan”.

By immersing herself in the creative environment at Slice for the past decade, Kathi has developed a comprehensive understanding of the synergy between marketing and communications. She is a graduate of the Greater Washington Board of Trade’s Small Business Academy and has done course work through Georgetown’s Continuing Education Program for Marketing Professionals. She is also a member of the US Women’s Chamber of Commerce and the Public Relations Society of America.

Kathi was raised in Pennsylvania and her family heritage is salt of the earth [German] farmers and engineers. She attended the College of William and Mary and earned a degree in Music Education. Kathi’s greatest delight has been the raising of five accomplished children, who along with her husband, Dick, pursue their passions in a varied field of creative interests.

Kathi is now following a lifelong dream of vocal performance in her spare time. She has begun appearing locally in restaurants and is an associate member of the Arcadia Vocal Studio and the American Center for Puccini Studies.

William “Will” Rabil grew up in the digital world. He learned on the original Sega game system and has continued to immerse himself with online gaming. These pastimes have bode well for him as he manages websites, mobile apps and digital multimedia.

Will’s software expertise includes Adobe Creative Suite 5 with a deep knowledge of CSS style sheets, HTML and HTML 5. His schooling has made him a sound web designer who understands the many facets of architecture, programming, navigation, and content management. He has a strong grasp of WordPress and Expression Engine CMS tools. He can animate concepts with Flash and After Effects as well as build multimedia video pieces in iMovie. Recently, he attended the Pepcon conference where he trained on InDesign 5.5 for building ePubs and eBooks from the program.

Will’s digital interests have crossed into developing mobile apps. His course training on the AppMobi XDK platform and HTML 5 has added a new dimension to his capabilities. Such groups like the Future Business Leaders of America, Boston University EMBA and Virginia Tech EMBA now have apps that have benefited from his skills. The VT EMBA director has said that their app has been critical for enhancing e-learning in the program.

With the explosion of social media channels, Will’s skills have expanded to include blog postings, YouTube, Facebook and Twitter development and managing email blasts.

Will is a Maryland native and the third of five children. His weekend pursuits include role-playing and reliving the middle ages with his Dagohir team (battling with swords, shields and bow and arrows). He earned his Associates degree from Montgomery College, MD and has two years of course work in web design and development from the Art Institute of Washington.

Leah KubeSocial Media Assistant and Administrator for Slice, believes that organization is the primary key to success. Her ability to establish processes and manage items keeps things humming at Slice. If you ever walk by her desk you’ll recognize what orderliness is all about.

Leah is a child of the online and social media world. An early adopter of Xanga and MySpace, she’s driven by an innate curiosity to connect with others and foster a sense of community. She knows the value of online searching as a means for deeper understanding. With her studies in psychology and her love of communication, training as a social media specialist has been a natural extension of her career development.

Leah currently manages Slice’s Facebook and Twitter pages. She also contributes regularly to the Slice blog. She has participated in Social Media Examiner’s Facebook and Social Media Success Summits and is Hootsuite Certified. And did we mention that she keeps the admin up-to-date in between?

Leah is the third of three children and lives in Maryland. She’s set to graduate from the University of Maryland University College with a degree in Psychology and plans on pursuing her PhD in psychology.

In her free time, Leah enjoys hanging out with friends, searching Pandora for new music to listen to and cooking up new bakery confections in the kitchen.  The Slice staff are often willing ‘guinea pigs’ of her culinary experimentation. More exotic cupcakes please!
